IF Gain Modification

Basic Information

Some hams report improved performance by opening up the Jupiter's internal RF Gain pot.

The Story

John NØKHQ described several very interesting mods on the Ten-Tec net on November 2, 2003.

He has turned up his "IF GAIN" to it's max value. The pot is located under the top cover on the left hand side. Given the poor RX on bands above 20M, this is an attractive change. Max gain is said to raise the gain of the RX by 20db. You can control the added gain with either the ATTN or RF Gain controls. You might want to speak with TT Service before doing this. John reports great results.

Several dozen hams reportedly have made this adjustment and reported improved performance. However...

Ten-Tec's Official Position:

Don't Do It!

"Sounds as if the Jupiter will have to be put on the bench and realigned. We DO NOT recommend turning up the IF gain as this will upset the signal handling capabilities and dynamic range of the receiver. This extra IF gain could also damage the A to D converter and this would be expensive to repair. The information on the reflector is incorrect and this modification is not approved by the factory."
